He was a real Tom Sawyer as a little boy, playing in the woods, camping and using toy guns. It was also a confusing time. Rebecca Taylor was born a male but discovered early a love for dolls and dresses. After growing up active in the LDS Church, serving a mission, getting married in the temple, having children and attempting suicide, Taylor came to a realization -- he was a she. 

Taylor is one example of why members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in Provo are organizing several events culminating in the first Provo Pride Festival on Sept. 21 at Memorial Park on 800 East and Center Street. 

According to organizers these events are a way to celebrate being human without being arrested. They are making it for families and appropriate for this area.

David Pate, president of Provo Pride, said the event's purpose is to educate the community on the issues connected to many members of the LGBT community.Shop wholesale Modest Prom Dresses from cheap Modest. 

Organizers met recently with Mayor John Curtis to discuss the festival. 

"We articulated to them the same concerns we would express to a group of 800 stroller-pushing mothers looking to formally congregate in one of our parks," city spokesman Corey Norman said. "I think you'll find the city most interested in the safety of the park and patrons." 

The Provo Pride organization will have to comply with rules concerning emergency access, bathrooms and security and maintaining neighbors' privacy just like any other group that applies for a permit of this type. 

The city cannot regulate park use based on which group wants to use it, as long as each group meets the necessary planning criteria.

"We want everybody at the festival, and in the community, to feel as comfortable as possible. We understand certain elements of Pride that happen in other communities would make people uncomfortable here," Pate said. 

In order to make money for the Sept. 21 event, Pride organizers will be holding a stand-up comedy show and silent auction Tuesday at 7 p.m. at The Madison on 300 West and Center Street. The event will feature Pate, who has performed with Patton Oswalt, Tim Robinson of "Saturday Night Live" and Jesse Popp from "Conan," Abigail Harrison Petterborg, a finalist in the 2013 Rocky Mountain Laugh Off, and Natashia Mower,Beading Ruching New Arrival Column Ruching Regency Chiffon Prom dresses by famous designer is every lady's dream. who has been Salt Lake comedy circuit for two years and recently placed third in Utah's "Last Comic Sandy" comedy competition.

"He is donating his copy of the magazine, with a special note only to be read by the purchaser," Pate said. Other activities coming in September include an interfaith meeting, drag queen competition and after-hours party the day of the festival. 

Asked why have the event, Pate became very solemn and said, "There are all kinds of frightening stats of gay and transgendered youth. Thirty percent commit suicide and 40 percent are homeless. That is unacceptable. We need to think why are our kids killing themselves and what can we do to stop that." 

Pate is hoping the Pride event will bring youth and families together, to be educated, informed and feel it a place of love and learning.
