Shanice Bland, a television, radio and film major, steals scenes as Linda, Robbie’s ex-fiance who re-enters the picture at an inconvenient moment in the musical’s plot. During her moment in the spotlight, “Let Me Come Home,” Bland shows off her intense voice and dance moves, overshadowing many of her cast mates with more face time.

Was FYP’s “The Wedding Singer” perfect? No. But perfection means little in comparison to the sheer joy visible on the cast members’ faces. They truly loved what they were doing.

And the audience loved it, too.

“This is the 21st century - society has changed and evolved. It is about time that gay rights are upheld and gay people are accepted, particularly by black people living in rural communities,” Tshepo told Daily Maverick on the phone from Durban. “We just want to lead happy and productive lives. We are gay but we are still African, and we want to live our lives in an African way following our traditions and beliefs,” he said.

At their wedding, the pair was joined by family and friends in a traditional ceremony that saw the doors of the Stanger Siva Sungam community hall flung wide open to the local community, who turned up in droves to celebrate the couple’s union. The ceremony included the slaughtering of a bull to ensure that the nuptials would be blessed in terms of ancestral traditions, and witnessed the exchange of customary gifts.

“We decided on a traditional wedding not only to keep in line with our customs and traditions, but we also wanted to show the people of this country that, yes - it is possible to have a traditional African gay wedding,” explains Modisane. “There is this idea that being gay is an ‘unAfrican’ phenomenon, that homosexuality is something to be ashamed of - that it is a Western thing. Thabo and I wanted to go against this notion by showing South Africans that being gay is indeed African and is very much a part of the African culture. We wanted people to know that a gay union can be accepted and celebrated by friends, family and the broader community,” he says.

Designer Preeti Wanchoo has revisited Kutch and Bhuj in Gujarat to seek inspiration for her collection that was showcased at a Talent Box show on March 24. "This is my first fashion show at a fashion week, and I wanted to take inspiration from where it all started for me — Gujarat. I studied fashion designing in Gujarat and during those days, travelled extensively to remote locations in Kutch and Bhuj to work with Ajrakh printers. I would doodle designs on the way," says Wanchoo. In her line, she captures elements of the Kutchi lifestyle with motifs such as peacocks, camels, kites and basic geometric shapes — circles, squares and triangles — that decorate the clusters of houses as they stand out against the arid land. She has used Maheswari silk in shades of lime, bright red, off-white and natural colours for maxi dresses, shirt dresses, skirts and tie-up dresses.

That long ago, give or take, then-waitress Barbara Waugh walked up to a table at the old Continental to take an order. She had admittedly heard it all before, but something about one particular tall, handsome stranger caught her eye.

Mrs Park moved to Toowoomba in 2008 after marrying an Australian man 10 years ago.

She finished the look off with a subtle smoky eye and a bold red lip. What do you think, Bettys? Love it or hate it? 

I've got to say that I don't really love it. To be fair, Stephenie has apparently been working really hard to get in shape, and she does in fact look fabulously healthy; but somehow I can't help but feel that this ensemble is more suited to, say, an afternoon garden party than a nighttime Hollywood premiere. There are ways to do floral for this type of event; Lucy Liu, for example, went for a full floral gown at the Golden Globes this year, and while we didn't love it, it was still appropriate for the event. Or maybe Stephenie should take a leaf out AJ Michalka's book: She went for floral too, but the dress was shorter, and its fit and flare fit made it the perfect party frock—totally premiere-worthy:

The trust realised that very few copies of the book were available in South Africa, and subsequently determined to bring out a new edition – with proceeds going to the trust's early childhood development programme. 

Haron's name is not often heard today, but the imam was one of the most prominent Muslim clerics of his day, known for his political involvement at a time when many Muslim leaders were silent about Apartheid's injustices. As the book's preface notes, Muslim leaders did not make any public statement about Haron's murder by the Security Branch: “they were, understandably, all extremely afraid”. But Haron never let his fears outweigh his integrity. 

Haron's formal education was limited to primary schooling only: a fact to which the authors attribute his passionate pursuit of education for his own children. His was an extremely religious upbringing: Haron was brought to Mecca by his mother three times, a momentous financial outlay for a poor family, and he could recite the Quran off by heart by the age of 14.

This was partially sparked by his decision to take the teachings of Islam to black migrant labourers. Here, the authors record, he “discovered an impatience for and a confidence in national liberation such as he had not previously encountered.” 

Sharpeville was a game-changer for Haron. Shocked by the events, he became part of a movement which smuggled food and other supplies into townships – an activity which earned him the scrutiny of the security police for the first time. He began to develop close relationships with leaders of the Coloured People's Congress (CPC), calling on his congregation to support their strikes. “Slowly his religious and political concerns began to come together in the struggle for liberation,” the authors write. 

The Killing Of The Imam is a slim book, and more than half is devoted to a reconstruction of Haron's time in detention. While this is chilling and important reading, the book's introductory chapters play an equally useful function in serving to humanise the imam. We learn, for instance, that he loved James Bond and had an entirely questionable dress sense as a youngster, favouring “lurid bow-ties and the widest possible flared trousers”. Fashion designers tend to talk about the luxury market in China as though there were hundred-dollar bills just piling up in the streets over there. For her $482, a bride-to-be gets to try on dresses for 90 minutes. There are 80 dresses displayed at the store, so she'd better change quickly. And forget about sending cell phone pics to mom, because photography and filming are strictly forbidden in the store. 

The fee is applied to the cost of the dress if the bride-to-be decides to make a purchase, but if she doesn't find her dream gown she's SOL. 

The fitting fee and photography ban are ostensibly to prevent copycats from knocking off Wang's designs. Some bridal stores in Hong Kong have been known to apply such fees, but Vera Wang's stores have not been associated with that sort of thing, even in Hong Kong. In fact, a big part of the controversy comes from the fact that, according to the Global Times, the Shanghai store is the only Vera Wang shop in the world to impose a trying on fee. 

“I can't imagine why I wouldn't spend that money on an airfare to Hong Kong, where the Vera salon doesn't charge for fittings – and the prices are overall much cheaper than on the Mainland,” wrote a commenter on the Wedding Bee forums. 

According to the attached poll, only one respondent on the Wedding Bee forum would be willing to pay a fee to try on dresses. The other 38 said, “Hells no.distributing bridal gown wedding dress and wedding accessories to N. America, Europe and Asia.” 

“[For] a company who wants to do business in China, this policy will not endear the company to Chinese clients,” said Red Luxury, a Chinese fashion and shopping blog that says shoppers in China are becoming increasingly offended at the differences they see between their shopping experiences overseas and in China.

Offending customers with country-specific rules seems like a really terrible idea for any company that wants to take advantage of China's booming luxury market, which is all of them, ever. Diane von Furstenberg once told an audience in Beijing that she wanted to sell a T-shirt to every person in China. Well, duh. There are more than 1.3 billion people in China. She could make a penny from each shirt and still clear $13 million. 

Vera Wang's dresses obviously bring more than a penny, and the company intends to sell a lot of them in China. The company's former president, Mario Grauso, told WWD that brides in Shanghai sometimes buy three wedding dresses – one in red, one in white, and one evening gown. Considering the dresses at the Shanghai shop range in price from 30,000 ($4,817) yuan to 300,000 yuan ($48,174), one imagines slot machine dollar signs rolling around in his eyeballs when he said it.
