In 2011, women ages 55 and over accounted for 5.2 percent, and men in that age range made up 7.9 percent of the more than 2.1 million marriages performed in the U.S., according to Bowling Green State University's National Center for Family and Marriage Research, based on analysis of census figures. That's up from 2001, when 2.6 percent of new marriages performed were among women in that age group; for men, it was 6.6 percent. 

And those older couples spend more. That's because they're usually empty nesters who don't have the same worries as their younger counterparts: They aren't saving for their first home, for instance, and they aren't burdened by huge student loan debts they must worry about paying off. 

As a result, older couples dish out about 10 percent to 15 percent more than the cost of the average wedding, which was $25,656 last year, down from the pre-recession peak in 2007 of $28,732, according to The Wedding Report. 

That's meant big business for companies that cater to brides and grooms-to-be. Zaven Ghanimian, CEO of Simon G. Jewelry, which sells engagement rings and other jewelry to about 900 small stores across the country, says men in their late 50s and older have been investing more on engagement rings. A few years ago, they were spending $1,500 to $2,000; now, they're shelling out $4,000 to $8,000. 

And at David's Bridal, the nation's largest bridal chain with 300 locations across the U.S., business from older couples has doubled in the past two years, compared with modest growth for the younger age group, says Brian Beitler, the chain's chief marketing officer. While older customers represent only 2 percent to 3 percent of overall sales, the company expects that figure to keep growing. 

And they're a lucrative bunch. David's Bridal, which is based in Consohocken, Pa., says older brides spend about $700 to $800 on gowns, including accessories like necklaces. That's higher than the $500 to $600 that customers in their 20s and early 30s typically spend. 

But older brides aren't just spending more; they're spending differently. For instance, in the past, older brides tended to stick with special-occasion dresses, but now they want more traditional wedding gowns. 

"She's our dream bride," says Catalina Maddox, fashion director at David's Bridal. "She wants everything that the 25-year-old bride wants, but more." 

The trend is so prevalent that David's Bridal is looking at ways to better connect with the older wedding crowd. Syrians have attacked aid workers distributing everything from diapers to the small trailer-like caravans that are preferred above UNHCR’s tents, and created primitive dollies to move them elsewhere in the camp if they don’t like the place they are assigned. 

They steal water tanks for their own use, bribe or threaten the drivers of the water trucks that come daily to replenish communal supplies, and try to set up latrines inside their own tents or caravans instead of using the communal washrooms, creating a massive challenge for sanitation efforts since the camp sits atop Jordan’s most important aquifer and all wastewater and sewage is supposed to be trucked out of the camp. Pinto also will offer non-clothing items on Kickstarter: $25 signed note cards, $75 for a print of one of her limited edition paintings, $5,000 to spend an afternoon with her in her studio or $10,000 to host a party with Pinto for 50 friends at the Chicago restaurant Sepia. Kickstarter backers will be listed on Pinto's website and receive special access to design previews of her future collections. 

Pinto is in a position where she has to reinvent, and in ways reintroduce, herself to customers because she has been out of the spotlight, said Marshal Cohen, chief retail industry analyst with market research firm The NPD Group. 

"They've discovered other brands and other products and are spending in a different way," Cohen said. "That's why redefining who she is and who her target audience is, is critical." 

Pinto attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and launched her own label in 1991 after a stint working with the late draping master Geoffrey Beene. She closed her business in 2002 for health and business reasons but reopened in 2004. Her clothing has been available at department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and other boutiques. 

Retailers have expressed interest in her new collection, Pinto said, but she wants to see what happens first with Kickstarter.

More students these days are not just coming out in school as gay but also as transgender or transsexual, and they're doing it at younger ages, says Kris Wells, a researcher with the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services at the University of Alberta. 

Wells says his office gets calls and emails from parents and schools across the country at least once a day asking for advice. A few years ago, he helped a child swap sex roles while in Grade 2 at a Catholic school in rural Alberta. 

Some students and their families choose a more secretive approach, switching schools or even moving to other provinces, so they can start fresh, he says. Others transition over the summer and return to school in the fall identifying with their new sex. 

Growing up, he hated wearing dresses. He liked Spiderman and dressed up as comic book hero The Thing one Halloween. When he was five, he had his mom take him to a hairdresser to cut off his long, brown locks. He wanted to look like Zac Efron from the movie "High School Musical." 

Wendy Kauffman says she and her husband, Greg, knew their daughter was different. She would often ask: "When do I get to be a boy?" And she pleaded to be born again in order to come out right. 

Kauffman says it finally hit home when Wren was about nine and Kauffman was tucking her six-year-old child, Avy, into bed one night. "She said to me, 'You know, Mom, Wren is a boy and he told me to tell you.'" 

Kauffman, tears welling up in her eyes, says it was a pivotal moment. Her youngest child had seen it all so clearly and, now, she did too. 

Kauffman later told Wren: "I love you whether you're a boy or a girl and I understand now. And we'll figure out how we can help you. And we'll do it together." 

Wren and his family say they have gone public and been in the media this year so that others going through the same situation know they're not alone. Kauffman hopes other parents realize how important it is to really listen to their children. Wren wants other kids to know it's OK to be who they are. 

Kauffman says she and her husband initially consulted with Wells about Wren's transition and he first started living life at home as a boy. After about a year, they were ready to tell his school.

There are a couple of older transgender students at the school, but Wren is by far the youngest.

Wren has started monthly drug injections to pause female puberty. When he's about 16, he'll decide whether he wants to start injecting male hormones. At 18, he'll be legally old enough to have sex reassignment surgery.

For the first time this year, parade officials requested a $200 contribution for a seat at the VIP breakfast, or $2,000 for a table of 10 from any candidate seeking office. Some unnamed politicians balked at paying, said WIADCA President Tom Bailey.
